Conventional traffic stripes are coated with a surface layer of glass beads that reflect light from the vehicle's headlights back to the driver's eyes. When these flat stripes get wet, the glass beads are coated with water and no longer reflecive light. Therefore, in rainy conditions, all flat type striping becomes virtually invisible.
